DHM GROUP has been selected as one of the key partners in the groundbreaking Hy4Smelt Project, an international collaboration between Primetals Technologies, Voestalpine, and Rio Tinto aimed at developing the world’s first industrial-scale demonstration plant for CO₂-free steel production.
The Hy4Smelt plant will integrate two advanced processes — direct reduction of ultrafine iron ore using hydrogen and electric smelting — to dramatically reduce the carbon footprint of steel manufacturing.
The installation will be built at the Voestalpine steel plant in Linz, Austria, with commissioning scheduled for late 2027.
Recognized as Austria’s largest climate protection research initiative, Hy4Smelt is currently the only project of its kind worldwide. Following successful demonstration, the technology is expected to be scaled up across industrial steel production facilities globally.
As part of its participation, DHM GROUP will supply key equipment for the Smelter, including:
- two sets of taphole drilling and plugging machines,
- hydraulic power units, and
- automation and control systems.
These solutions are designed to ensure reliable, efficient, and safe operation, contributing to the overall performance and sustainability of the Hy4Smelt plant.
“We are honored by Voestalpine’s trust in choosing DHM GROUP as a supplier. Participating in such an ambitious and forward-looking project is both a privilege and a recognition of our technological capabilities. We are proud to support the advancement of green metallurgy and the industry’s transition toward sustainable steel production,” stated DHM GROUP representatives.
The Hy4Smelt Project stands as a symbol of how innovation, international cooperation, and cutting-edge engineering can drive the transformation of heavy industry toward a carbon-free future.
DHM GROUP’s participation highlights the company’s technological excellence and commitment to supporting world-class green metallurgy initiatives.
